Clear statements in the budget proposal on the Swedish Institute for Human Rights

Today, the Swedish Institute for Human Rights takes note of the government’s budget bill for 2024. It clearly states that the Institute for Human Rights “… has a central role in fulfilling the goal of ensuring full respect for Sweden’s international commitments on human rights.”

”We welcome the government’s clear statement in the budget bill on the Institute’s status and are pleased with the high ambitions the government expresses when it comes to the realization of human rights in Sweden,” says Elisabeth Rynning, Chairperson of the Board of the Swedish Institute for Human Rights. “We continue our work to build a strong and independent National Human Rights Institution that will be an effective voice in promoting the safeguarding of human rights in Sweden.”

In the budget bill, the government further writes that a worrying global trend when it comes to the respect for human rights points to the need for strong human rights systems and that Sweden should continue to be a role model in this field. Elisabeth Rynning points out that this also requires that the Swedish Institute for Human Rights will be provided with the right preconditions and sufficient funding to play the central role it has been given.
